First story – chapter three

BAZ

I walk into the living room, and find Simon on the sofa, staring at the TV. “Where is Penelope?” I ask.

“I don’t know” He answers without turning around. His voice trembles.I sit next to him, and put my hand around his shoulders. He turnes around and hugs me tight. He lays on me like that, his face buried in my shoulders. I kiss his hair, and hold him closer to me.

I don’t know what has happened between Simon and Bunce, but that’s not good. For neither of them.

“Can we go find her?” Simon lifts his head and looks at me

“Do you know where she is? Where could she be?”

“No. She said she couldn’t be here right now, and just, left” He looks so sad, and I’m pretty sure he thinks Bunce broke up with Shepard because of him, which is very possible, and very not helpful. “Have you tried calling her?” I ask

“Yes. goes straight to voicemail”

“What about Shepard? You want to call him?”
“Voicemail”
I nod and look at the air for a while.
“You think she’s fine?” He looks at me, worried.
“For sure. She’s probably just out somewhere, kicking some numpties ass or something” Now he looked even more worried. Woops.
“Can you cast a ‘Come out, come out,  wherever you are’ ?” He asks

“I don’t know, Simon. She will only get mad and not want to come back” I say.
“But, we don’t know where she is!” he looks at me with a desperate look. “She can be hurt! She can get lost! She can..” He weeps. I hug him tightly and say “It’s okay. Shhh. It’s okay. If you really want me to, I can ‘Come out, come out, wherever you are’ her.”
“No, you’re right. She’ll just run away somewhere, and then she could actually be in trouble”
He smiles at me with sad eyes and kisses me slowly. Then, someone knocks on the door, hesitantly. Simon jumps towards the door and opens it, without even checking who it is.
Bunce is standing in the hall, dripping rain water on the little rug she got from her mother a few months ago. “Where have you been?!” Simon shouts. “You’ve been gone for hours, and you wouldn’t bother calling? Texting? What the hell, Penny?”
“Relax, Snow” I tell him. “She’s only been gone for two hours. You’re not her Dad. Let her talk, for Merlin’s sake”
“Don’t tell me to relax, Baz!”
“Can you two just shut up for one second?!” She yells at us. “Look, Simon, I’m sorry I disappeared, but that’s not the point right now. Shepard’s missing. I tried calling him after I left, and he didn’t pick up, so I thought he must be mad at me, and I drove to his old apartment”

“Which is exactly what you need to do if someone doesn’t want to talk to you” I add with a sarcastic face.
“Shut up, Baz” Bunce says. “So. I was at his apartment, and I couldn’t find him, so I casted ‘Come out, come out, wherever you are’. Then I felt wind all over my face, and I heard a weird whisper coming from the same place the wind did” At the end of the last sentence, it is almost impossible to understand what she is saying because of her sobs and tearing, but when I finally get it I stand there in sad silence. “Wow. I’m sorry.” I whisper softly.
“Wait, why are we sorry?” Simon asks with a confused look on his face
“Because when someone isn’t showing up when you ‘Come out, come out, wherever you are’ them, it means that you’re doing the spell wrong, or that your magic isn’t strong enough. But when there is wind and whispers..” Her voice cracks as she speaks, and I complete the sentence for her: “It usually means that the person is either being held up somewhere with magic holding him from, well, coming out, or that he’s..” My voice gets lower and softer when I say it. “Or that he can’t show up. Because he’s dead”
Simon looks at me in shock. Penelope gets off the sofa and is walking towards her bedroom’s door. “What were you doing there anyway?” Simon asks, and looks somehow angry.
“I don’t know, Simon” she sighs. “I guess I just needed to see him”
“But you just broke up with him! What on earth would you do there?” hw asks, now standing.

“That’s not the point!” Bunce yells. “So I went to see him. Whatever. That is not the point. The point is that Shepard can be kidnapped, maybe even dead. The point is not why I went to see him again, but is if he’s fine. So if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go see if he is.” She slams the door behind her, and then starts casting spells quietly behind her closed door.
